  • What's in this section? Information and resources useful for those organisations, institutions and individuals across Coventry & Warwickshire who have a role in supporting the educational progression of the region's care leavers.
  • Life's Ladder - Barriers to Higher Education for Care Leavers Life's Ladder consists of two short films made a by a group of young care leavers from Coventry & Warwickshire and looks at the barriers they face when considering university as an option. The first film focuses on the young people and their stories and the second film focuses on interviews with professionals who work in the sector. The films can be viewed below and will form the basis of discussions and action to improve access to Higher Education for care leavers in Coventry and Warwickshire.
  • UCAS Information for Care Leavers For care leavers applying to higher education, there's lots of support available to help. They could get financial support and advice, help settling in to higher education, and accommodation all year round.
  • Student Finance for Care Leavers A guide to student finance support for those with a care background. Please note, additional local financial support may be on offer too. This information can be found by contacting your local authority
  • The Who Cares? trust The Who Cares? Trust is a voice for children in care. Everything we do is designed to improve the day to day experience of children and young people in care - and their future lives. We believe that every child in care should receive the support, encouragement and opportunities they need to enjoy their life and to achieve.
  • Propel Propel is a new website created by The Who Cares? Trust to help inspire more care-experienced young people into higher education. Propel provides full information about each educational institution’s provision for care leavers, for example whether 365 day accommodation is available and what bursaries and grants are on offer, as well as providing named contacts for care leavers to get in touch with directly. Care leavers, as well as the professionals and carers supporting them, will also be able to find other useful information such as an overview of student funding, top tips and inspirational stories from care-experienced students.
  • A Guide to Supporting Care Leavers in HE and FE This guide has been compiled by the National Network for the Education of Care Leavers (NNECL) in order to support colleagues in Universities and Colleges who are new to or expanding their engagement in supporting care leavers. This includes raising aspirations, supporting progression into further and higher education and subsequently retaining and supporting their success.
  • Coventry Voices of Care Council The Voices of Care Council in Coventry are a very successful independently constituted group who work with young people within the care system and care leavers, giving them a voice and an input into the decisions made around the services provided.
  • Warwickshire Children in Care Council The Children in Care Council is the voice for children and young people in the care of Warwickshire County Council. The CICC is made up of children and young people aged 11-20 who have experience of life in care. Their aim is to improve services for other Warwickshire looked after children and young people up to the age of 25.
  • Refugee Support Network - Higher Education Services The Refugee Support Network works with young people affected by displacement and crisis, enabling them to access, remain and progress in education at all stages of their migration journey. Resources available include a national advice line for young people, practitioners and university staff, open Monday and Wednesday from 2-5pm (07597 583228) and an email address where young people can get in touch with us about higher education ( A toolkit called 'Thinking Ahead to Higher Education' which helps young people think through their options for higher education. It's free of charge for young people but there's a small cost for others. A preview is available at the link below.
