We're recruiting!
Do you think you would make a good mentor or know someone who would?

Become a UniversityGo! Ambassador

As a UniversityGO! Ambassador you will be an essential part of the UniversityGO!
programme. Meeting students aged 11-14 in schools. You will mentor a student you
are matched with for a full academic year and support them to raise their career
aspirations. All students on the UniversityGO! programme are in local authority care.
You must be able to commit to meet your mentee for the full academic year and you
will be supported to plan and deliver your own 1:1 sessions and liaise with your
designated school. The sessions can work around your current commitments.
*In the current climate, mentoring may initially take place virtually with plans to shift
to physical, in-school mentoring when this is possible.*

Skills and Experience
You will need to be friendly, enthusiastic, dependable and reliable.
Experience with working in schools or with this age group is
desirable but not essential.
Previous mentoring or outreach experience is also desirable.

International Day of Families
The International Day of Families is on Friday 15th May 2020 and we thought that we would highlight this with a short video full of tips to help maintain positive relationships during quarantine. Hopefully you will find some of the information in the video useful to help limit any daily rants, door slams, grumpiness or tears (and that’s just those of us who live on our own!). It’s not just for people living with families, the information applies to anyone spending lockdown with any other people and will hopefully help bring a sense of balance and harmony into your environment…. If it doesn’t help with that, then at least it might keep you busy enough for a few minutes whilst you pretend to be doing something really important! Just click on the link to watch:

Discovery Day #3 Round Up
'Create a Campaign' Politics and Social Sciences Day

On Wednesday March 4 we held our THIRD Discovery Day, Create a Campaign at University of Warwick. Students had an opportunity to create their very own campaign, explore careers, and study options around politics.

The day included the following activities:
  • Experienced a day in the life as a University student, moving around campus for different sessions
  • An introduction to politics, activism, freedom of speech and other political ideologies
  • Working in mixed school groups to create their own campaign, supported by ThinkHigher staff and ambassadors.
  • Learnt about successful forms of activism, such as Tampon Tax and making up skirting illegal
  • Showcased their campaigns to the rest of the group – presenting their ideas and answering questions

We had some excellent feedback from the students about the activities they took part in and it was clear that they took away some excellent learning points from the trip and that it helped some of them to be able to see options available to them if they wish to pursue a career or further study in Politics.

We were blown away with the amazing campaigns our students came up with in just one day, well done to our amazing students!

Discovery Day #2 Round Up
Business and Marketing with Superimpose Global

On Wednesday 26th February, 50 of our year 9 and 10 students came to Coventry University to experience a masterclass in business and marketing with Ollie and Lilah from Superimpose Global. Superimpose are a leading marketing agency who have worked to create incredible campaigns with the likes of Adidas, Reebok, British Fashion Council and many other well known brands.

What did we do?
Our students were lucky enough to hear from Ollie, founder and creative director of Superimpose about his own experience from growing up in Coventry to building a successful business of his own and they were then set off on their own task to create their own marketing campaign for ThinkHigher.

We had all sorts of pitches from football matches, a 'teach the teachers' event, festivals, TikTok adverts, gaming apps... It's safe to say we were pretty impressed with our students creativity! Feedback from all of our students was really positive and our students loved the chance to meet industry professionals.

Well done team.

Discovery Day #1 Round Up
Performing Arts with Belgrade Theatre and Coventry University

Our Year 9 and 10 students recently took part in a ThinkHigher Discovery Day trip to the Belgrade Theatre and Coventry University where they had an opportunity to explore careers and study options around perfoming arts on Wednesday 12th February 2020.

A tour of the Belgrade Theatre
The tour covered the whole of the theatre, from back stage access to being able to stand on stage and experience the feeling of looking out to the audience.  They were also shown the various elements that are required to make the theatre run, the history and the community connections

A careers session with Belgrade Theatre staff
Sessions were delivered by various members of The Belgrade Theatre team including the General Manager, Marketing manager, Youth Outreach worker, Community Engagement officer

A 2 hour Performing Arts workshop delivered by Coventry University Academics
Students took part in a fun and practical workshop to show the students to experience what takes place while studying Performing Arts at university level delivered by Coventry University Academic staff on site at Coventry University

We had some excellent feedback from the students about the events that demonstrates that they took away some excellent learning points from the trip and that it helped some of them to be able to see options available to them if they wish to pursue a career or further study in performing arts. Well done to all our students who attended and were superstars all day!

Tate

Tate Mckay is a year 12 student at St Thomas More Catholic School and Sixth Form in Nuneaton, Warwickshire with ambitions to study Sport Psychology at University. Three years ago, at the start of Year 10, Tate was unsure about her future and Higher Education was not on her radar. At this point she was given the chance to become a ThinkHigher student which she fully embraced and hasn’t looked back since.

Tate’s first encounter with ThinkHigher was a one to one appointment with her Raising Aspirations Coordinator, Jamie Ormes. It was at this meeting where Tate was surprised to hear that she had been chosen because of her potential to access Higher Education. The  mentoring sessions with Jamie took place in Tate’s school and gave Tate a platform to discuss her education and plans for the future.

“Tate was excited by the project but I remember she really didn’t like school, she was often late and gave the impression that she couldn’t wait to leave school. Seeing Tate working hard at her A Levels at one of the best sixth forms in the area shows how far she has come” Jamie Ormes, ThinkHigher Raising Aspirations Coordinator.

Based on her interests, Tate elected to attend two ThinkHigher Discovery Days; one focussing on Maths (University of Warwick) and another focussing Identity and Sociology (Coventry University). This gave her the opportunity to experience both campus and city universities and take part in interactive sessions alongside students with similar interests from a range of different schools.

To reward participation in the programme and foster a positive experience of education, ThinkHigher invited 33 students to an outwards bounds residential in North Wales (Dol Y Moch). Tate stepped out of her comfort zone and attended the trip.

After a challenging and positive first year with ThinkHigher, Tate moved in to Year 11 and decided to attend their GCSE revision boot camp called ‘PASStonbury’ during her school holiday. “For me they helped me find a way that worked best for me to study for my GCSEs.” Tate’s GCSE result were so good, she was able to secure a place at St Thomas More Sixth Form where she studies Psychology, Physical Education and Maths.

Tate is now looking forward to attending ThinkHigher’s Year 12 UNI day in April to find out more about university life, the next steps and to begin preparations towards applying to University.
“Being a part of ThinkHigher has improved my social skills as I was put in multiple situations where I had to interact with new people I had never met before. The biggest example of this is when we went to Wales for a few days and I got to do so many amazing activities I would have never normally had the chance to do”

“I would highly recommend ThinkHigher to other students as it gives you an insight into higher education as well as helping and supporting you at your current level.”
